Is it a book about pirates based on fact, with stories about real pirates?
There are two floors of nautical lore and history; first floor encompasses shipwrecks and how they are found using today's technology. Kathleen was our guide on the first floor, lending much insight to the many displays, and among many fun and educational interactive items, she helped us operate the arms of "Zeus", the deep-sea reconnaissance vehicle, and practice retrieving coins from the display base. The second floor is devoted to all things piratical!
There we met a very authentic golden-age pirate rogue named Cap'n John he is reported to be the younger brother of a certain Captain of The Black Pearl, and not to be trifled with! It was worth the cost of admission to have Cap'n John guide us through the displays! Many large displays and images, lots of facts and a bit of lore to read on your own, and even some pirate skeletons wasting away in the brig! The gift shop has some beautiful items, including some offerings from a few choice shipwrecks that you can purchase and take home for your very own!
This is not some silly stereotyped frolic put on by the mouse-eared juggernaut in Orlando, but instead an authentic and sincere and thus, refreshing! Thank you so much for your visit! I'm glad to hear Kathleen and Cap'n John were able to assist in making your visit just a little more memorable. We look forward seeing you again on your next visit to the islands! My 5 year old son was very excited about learning of both shipwrecks and pirates.

We also had twin 2 year olds with us. They first have you watch a movie which was a nice precursor to what you are about to see in the museum. Once we got into the actual museum, we almost immediately were met with a guide who is there to assist if you have any questions. This is where it got kind of weird for me. We indicated that we didn't have any questions at the time but would advise if we did. The guide essentially proceeded to follow us to each exhibit, hovering over us. When it came down to it, I think she had concerns about my kids touching anything.
So she constantly followed and made sure they didn't push buttons too long or move too fast.
It made me feel really untrusted, especially as a parent, and we felt extremely rushed. I just kept going to the next exhibit hoping to lose our babysitter, and it never happened and suddenly we were done. While I appreciate her intentions, It was very frustrating to feel incredibly rushed through exhibits and not feel like I was alone with my family. Had we paid for the children, I would have probably said something. There are a number of exhibits with placards describing what you are viewing.
My husband said they were interesting to read, but I didn't have the opportunity to confirm. I think this would be a wonderful place if you are alone, but if you have kids, I would skip it.

Also worth mentioning - they are only open on days that ships are in port. So, if you are staying on the island like we were, make sure you know the ship schedule so you can plan accordingly. A beautiful museum with a lot of greatinformation and artifacts.
We had a great time. The only complaint was that the staff, while being incredibly nice, was a bit too overbearing making it difficult to just read the information and take time at the museum. Profile JOIN. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers. Pirates Treasure Museum.
